Summary
J.R. Simplot Company has an exciting opening for a patent agent to join the growing Intellectual Property Practice of the Simplot Legal Department. The person hired for this position has a unique opportunity to work collaboratively and directly with many internal clients across many industries in the U.S. and internationally. The position reports to the Chief Intellectual Property Counsel.
The Patent Agent’s primary role will be to conduct patent due diligence and competitive intelligence surveys regarding emerging technologies related to genetics, food product development and innovations in agriculture, including the use of Artificial Intelligence to facilitate the opportunities in these areas. Technology landscape mapping and forecasting IP trends will also be key to the position.
Key Responsibilities
Evaluating the IP landscape and trends in emerging fields of technology
Conducting freedom to operate (FTO) assessments, particularly for biotechnology research such as gene sequence searches. (The person will be trained to conduct FTO assessments for other technology areas such as in the investigation new and innovative food shapes and formulations)
Identifying patentable inventions and trade secrets
Drafting and helping to prosecute domestic and foreign patent applications
Assisting in patent disputes and patent litigation matters
Training researchers on best practices to identify, protect, and defend IP
Typical Education
- Advanced degree in a life science discipline is required
Relevant Experience
Admitted to the Patent Bar of the USPTO
At least 2-3 years’ demonstrated experience in a law firm or in-house
Advanced degree in a life science discipline is required
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Attention to detail is critical
Strong analytical skills and must be able to convey technical ideas concisely and effectively
